The little town o Sturgis,
Kentucky (population 2.200), sits in the northwest corner of the state
and it is host to one of the best biker parties that I have been to in a
long time.
It is a beautiful area for
riding with its rolling hills and winding roads that pass through rural
areas. The townspeople and kids wave at you and welcome signs are all
over the place. Everywhere we went it was, ‘glad you’re here, hope you
have a good stay” You really feel welcome and it sets the mood for a
good time.
This event was originally
started in 1993 by Phil Smith of Custom Cycle and Van Supply, and Ron
Smith of H&T Enterprises, in Indiana as a one-day event that drew 2500
that could not, or did not, want to make it to the other Sturgis.
It is now held at the
Union County Fairgrounds on Route 60 and it has turned into a four day
event that draws almost 25,000 people. There were plenty of vendors of
good food, shirts, and other merchandise was readily available. They
also had a good turn out of tattooist and airbrush artists.
Even with the increase in
numbers of the amount expected, everything went off very smoothly.
There is plenty to do like
PARTY—watch the bike show—PARTY—watch or participate in the
races—PARTY—watch or participate in the biker games like the slow race,
weenie bite, barrel push etc.—PARTY—and especially the LOWFAT CHOCOLATE
PUDDING WRESTLING CONTEST for women—PARTY—well, I guess you get the
idea.
The security is provided
by the promoters and no local police are allowed on the premises. No one
under 18 is permitted in and ID cards are checked.
The campgrounds are
massive with every thing from one-person tents to motor homes. That is
where the real partying goes on. Large amounts of alcohol are consumed
even though none is sold on the premises. You must bring your own booze,
or find some one to share theirs with you. That is not at all that hard
to do. By the mounds of empty beer cans lying around it is evident big
fun is being had by all. They are going to need a tractor-trailer, or
two, to carry the dead-soldiers away.
There are campfires and
friendly people, naked women, burnouts, show-your-tits signs with plenty
of women trying to comply, loud music and just partyin’ and partyin’.
I have made up my mind
that I’m going to this Sturgis, as opposed to the other one. The
Governor of South Dakota has already let me know he doesn’t want me or
my kind at the rally there. Hey, come to think of it that may be some of
you, too!
Look for me at the FUN
STURGIS-KENTUCKY, that is. Hope to see you all again and get to party
some more.
Ride safe.
